My Experience as Overall-in-Charge for BuildingBloCS SG
BuildingBloCS SG, an inter-school organization dedicated to promoting computer science education among secondary school students. This past year, I had the incredible opportunity to serve as the Overall-in-Charge (OIC), an experience that not only honed my leadership skills but also solidified my passion for tech outreach.
As OIC, I wore many hats. First and foremost, I oversaw all operations within BBCS. This meant managing a diverse team of student volunteers from various junior colleges across Singapore. Effective communication and collaboration were key. I liaised with school leads, coordinating manpower for various tasks and ensuring a smooth workflow across different institutions. To streamline operations, I also implemented a management framework. This framework allowed us to effectively track task progress and team member efficiency, ensuring we delivered on our goals.
Beyond internal operations, BBCS actively organizes conferences and workshops to spark interest in computing among secondary school students. Coordinating these events involved securing speakers, crafting engaging content, and ensuring a seamless experience for all participants.
Collaboration with external organizations was another crucial aspect of my role. We actively partnered with groups like FOSSASIA, leveraging their available audience to further increase our outreach. Furthermore, I spearheaded efforts to scout and secure new partnerships, further expanding our reach and event portfolio. These partnerships included collaborations with organizations like AI Singapore, CTE-STEM, and CodeCombat.
The COVID-19 pandemic presented a unique challenge. However, instead of letting it hinder our progress, we embraced online platforms. By adapting to a fully virtual format, we successfully conducted events and maintained a strong level of participation. Leading BuildingBloCS SG has been a rewarding journey. It allowed me to develop my leadership skills, cultivate collaboration among diverse teams, and most importantly, contribute to fostering a passion for technology in the next generation. The experience has solidified my desire to pursue a career in tech, where I can continue to leverage innovation and collaboration to make a positive impact.
